CHANGES 1.3.3.x to 1.3.5
4
========================
5

15577 mrdocs 6
1) Because of the new file format features, Scribus documents saved in 1.3.5+
9758 craig 7
are *not* backward compatible with 1.3.3.x or 1.2.x .
8

9
2) You *can* install both versions in parallel and run them at the same time.
10
The only caveat is to install them using different prefix/ directories e.g
11
1.3.3.x in /usr/local and 1.3.5 in /opt or $home/bin. You can use the
12
      -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/path/to/install/dir
13
argument to CMake to set where Scribus should be installed.
14

12073 mrdocs 15
3) In some cases Scribus 1.3.3 uses wrong character sizes when layouting text.
16
This might cause differences in linebreaking if you open a 1.3.3.x
17
   document in 1.3.5.

CHANGES 1.2.x to 1.3.x
20
======================
21

3290 mrdocs 22
Important notes on the differences between 1.2.x and 1.3.x:
1231 mrdocs 23

1556 craig 24
1) Because of the new file format features, Scribus documents saved in 1.3.x
25
   are *not* backwardly compatible.
1231 mrdocs 26

1556 craig 27
2) Because of the new enhanced menu/keyboard shortcuts code, 1.2.x keyboard
28
short cuts are not migrated and will need to be recreated once on the first
3961 mrdocs 29
   launch 1.3.x.
1499 mrdocs 30

4415 mrdocs 31
3) On initial launch, 1.3.x will offer to convert preferences to the new 1.3.x
1556 craig 32
format. This is recommended. Scribus 1.3.x will store its preferences
4415 mrdocs 33
separately from 1.2.x. Moreover, 1.3.2 caches available fonts. The first
34
startup may take longer than anticipated.
1231 mrdocs 35

4415 mrdocs 36

1556 craig 37
4) You *can* install both versions in parallel and run them at the same time.
2815 mrdocs 38
The only caveat is to install them using different prefix/ directories e.g
1556 craig 39
1.2 in /usr/local and 1.3 in /opt or $home/bin. You can use the --prefix
40
argument to configure to set where Scribus should be installed.

CONVERTING 1.1.x DOCUMENTS
43
==========================
44

45
Newer versions of Scribus use a different way to find fonts from Scribus 1.1.1.
1556 craig 46
To convert older( =< 1.1.1) documents follow the procedure below:
1231 mrdocs 47

238 Franz 48
1) Create a document with the old Version of Scribus containing all your Fonts.
68 Franz 49
2) Open the new Scribus and go to the Font Substitution List.
1065 cbradney 50
3) Clear out all current substitutions.
1556 craig 51
4) Open the Document created in 1) and substitute all the fonts with the
1065 cbradney 52
   correct new fonts.
68 Franz 53

1231 mrdocs 54
When you now open old documents Scribus will convert all font names
238 Franz 55
automatically.

LANGUAGE SUPPORT
60
================
61

1556 craig 62
To use Scribus in your native language be sure that the environment variable
9758 craig 63
LC_ALL, LC_MESSAGES, LANG, Qt locale, OR the command line option of -l/--lang
64
<lang> is set correctly. This is also can be changed in the preferences and
65
takes effect immediately.

GhostScript
71
-----------
5020 mrdocs 72

9758 craig 73
One of the more crucial tools Scribus depends on is Ghostscript. While it is
74
not required for compilation, Scribus must be able to find a recent version of
75
Ghostscript at runtime for all features to be present and fully working. In
76
particular, printing, print preview, and PDF/EPS import will not be fully
77
functional without Ghostscript. Ghostscript 8.x is STRONGLY recommended.
78
Support for versions older than 8.x is untested and Scribus may not operate
79
reliably using such an old version of gs.
5020 mrdocs 80

9758 craig 81
You can find out which version of GhostScript Scribus is using in the about
82
dialog. If you have a newer version installed somewhere else you can
83
specify its' location in the preferences.
84

85
You can get a new version of Ghostscript from http://www.ghostscript.com/ .
86
There is documentation on how to install a new version of Ghostscript on the
87
Scribus website:
88
    http://docs.scribus.net/index.php?lang=en&sm=dtptoolbox&page=toolbox7
89
or you can just download it and install it in /usr/local, then set your PATH.
90

91
Debian users who haven't installed their own newer version of Ghostscript may
92
want to install gs-gpl then use
93
    `update-alternatives --config gs'
94
as root to select gs-gpl as the default version of Ghostscript to use. The ESP
95
GhostScript used by many Debian systems by default will not work as well as gs-gpl.

ICC Profiles for Colour Management
98
----------------------------------
99

1556 craig 100
Activating Color Management *requires* installation of CMYK and RGB ICC
1231 mrdocs 101
profiles. Please see the included help files, FAQ's on www.scribus.net and
9758 craig 102
http://docs.scribus.net for details. As of the 1.3.1 release, Scribus ships
103
with 2 icc profiles, which are installed only to enable color management
104
functionality. (This is not true for some distribution packages, where
105
licensing rules prevent the inclusion of a full set of profiles). The profiles
106
*do not* provide meaningful color management for printing. Additional profiles
107
are downloadable from www.scribus.net and depend on your hardware and printing
108
environment.

PSD/CMYK TIFF Support
9758 craig 116
---------------------
3290 mrdocs 117

12073 mrdocs 118
1.3.2+ now has support for CMYK PSD and 8-bit CMYK TIFF support. RGB PSD and
9758 craig 119
16-bit TIFF support is being developed. PSD and TIFF support includes layers, ICC
11092 mrdocs 120
profiles and embedding clipping paths. CMYKA is supported in Scribus 1.3.4+

FONT ISSUES
9758 craig 123
-----------
3465 mrdocs 124

125
There are extensive notes and detailed on documentation on fonts and trouble
9758 craig 126
shooting of font issues in the help documentation and online at
3465 mrdocs 127
http://docs.scribus.net Please read these carefully before filing bugs.
128

129
There are issues with the postscript naming conventions with the Computer Modern
130
Type 1 fonts, depending on distribution. In some cases, not all fonts from the
131
same family are visible in Scribus. We are working on a more complete solution
11092 mrdocs 132
during a future release.

1557 craig 148
Debian
9758 craig 149
------
238 Franz 150

151
If Scribus does not start while complaining about the absence of
3290 mrdocs 152
Postscript fonts please install either xfonts-scalable or gsfonts-x11.
238 Franz 153
They are in the "Recommends" and will be installed by all sensible apt
154
front-ends.
155

9758 craig 156
You may not see an entry for colour management in the Scribus preferences. If
157
you do not, you must install the icc-profiles package from non-free to get a core
158
set of ICC profiles. This will not provide enough for you to get effective colour
159
managemnet, but will provide better RGB<->CMYK conversions than the unmanaged mode.
160
See the "ICC Profiles for colour management" section above for details.

SuSE
9758 craig 165
--------
238 Franz 166

9758 craig 167
To enable direct CUPS support which recommended, make sure both cups-devel and
168
openssl-devel are installed. Suse enables ssl support in CUPS. The current
169
Scribus config checks do not test for this. See the BUILDING file for details.

Red Hat / Fedora
9758 craig 175
----------------
1557 craig 176

9758 craig 177
The Scribus RPMS in Fedora Extras are of very high quality and have been
178
created with close cooperation from Fedora maintainers and the Scribus Team. We
179
recommend them for most users as they will ensure correct integration with the
180
menuing system and mime types. Alternately, you can use the Fedora Core
181
repositories maintained on the build server - see the downloads section on
182
www.scribus.info for details.

There is a separate file, PACKAGING for detailed hints and notes on building
1868 mrdocs 185
packages for Scribus.
186

2555 craig 187
On Fedora, if you report a crash bug, it would be extremely handy if you could
9758 craig 188
build a debug version of Scribus (-DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=debug argument to cmake)
189
and get a stack trace. This is not required, but does help us diagnose the
190
problem more quickly and reliably. Some information on stack traces can be
